Mosbarger set the first of her two individual records as a junior in 1994 during a meet at Olney as she set a new mark in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.4. It also the very first time she had competed in that event. Mosbarger established her second individual school record as a senior in 1995 when she posted a time of 26.0 in the 200-meter dash.

Besides her two records set outside, Mosbarger also broke the school record in the 200-meter dash during indoor competition in 1994 with a time of 27.9. 

It was as a member of the 800-meter medley relay team where Mosbarger enjoyed her biggest accomplishment. During the 1994 postseason Mosbarger teamed up with Angie Burroughs, Julie Bierman and Serra Morton and earned an eighth place finish at the Class AA state meet with a school record-setting time of 1:49.6. That relay team has also been inducted into the Salem Sports Hall of Fame.

Mosbarger’s first school record came as a sophomore in 1993. She, along with Bierman, Morton and Erika Bryant, teamed up for a school record time of 4:05.2 in the 1600-meter relay.

Another relay mark fell in 1995 in the 800-meter relay as Mosbarger, Morton and Lori Huston posted a time of 1:47.0. It was also the 800 relay where Mosbarger helped set another record. This one was during indoor competition as she joined Huston, Morton and Stacey Easley and notched a time of 1:55.2.

Mosbarger, who also competed in cross country during high school, tried to continue her track career at Eastern Illinois University. That attempt ended her freshman season when she developed shin splints. Mosbarger was able to earn a BS degree in family and consumer science.

At the time of her Hall of Fame induction Mosbarger resided in Salem with her husband, Ivan, and son, Mays.

McMullen will always hold the distinction of being the only girl to win four North Egypt Conference individual cross country championships, as that league disbanded in 2003. When McMullen won the first four of those NEC titles in 1996 as a freshman, she did so by establishing a new Salem Bryan Park Course record with a time of 12:06. McMullen had to be at her best that day because teammate Trisha (Hustedde) Richards also broke the course record.

McMullen’s other NEC cross country titles came at Carmi in 1997 with a time of 12:51, at Fairfield in 1998 with a time of 13:34 and finally at Olney in 1999 in a time of 15:54, which marked the first year girls courses were lengthened from two to two and a half miles. Led by McMullen, the Lady Wildcats won the NEC championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998.

McMullen competed in the Class AA state cross country meet during all four years in high school Salem qualified as a team during three of those years. As a freshman in 1996, McMullen was fifth at the Troy Triad Regional and fourth at the Centralia Sectional to lead Salem to team championships in both meets. She ended the year with a 107th place finish at the state meet, as Salem took 19th as a team.

Led by McMullen’s seventh place finish at the Centralia Regional, Salem defended its regional title at Centralia in 1997. McMullen was 14th at the Decatur Sectional race, as the Lady Wildcats finished third as a team and earned another trip to state. When McMullen helped Salem to a 19th place at the state meet, she set a new school standard at the state race for the best place (54th) and best time (12.33).

McMullen accomplished some more school history in 1998 when she became the first Lady Wildcat runner to win an individual regional championship, as she took home the title at Mt. Vernon with a time of 15:21 and led Salem to a third regional title. McMullen was ninth at the Centralia Sectional, as a second place team finish earned Salem another trip to state. McMullen improved her girls school record for best place at the state race when she finished 38th in a time of 15:07 and the 15th place finish by the Lady Wildcats was also the best in school history.

McMullen’s fourth and final trip to state in cross country came as an individual in 1999, as she was third at the Salem Regional, 23rd at the Centralia Sectional and 125th at state when she was Salem’s only qualifier.

McMullen’s success was not just limited to cross country. During her freshman track season in 1997, McMullen broke the SCHS record in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:48.2 and also set a new NEC record with a 12:16. As a sophomore McMullen qualified for the Class AA state meet in the 3200 meters and finished 29th with a time of 12:16. As a sophomore McMullen earned another trip to state in the 3200 meters in 1998 and improved her finish to 20th in a time of 11:49. Also during her sophomore season McMullen set new SCHS indoor records in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:37.1 and the 3200 meters at 12:21.8. She also teamed up with Stephanie Helton, Trisha Hustedde and Megan Grizzle to set a new SCHS indoor record in the 3200-meter relay with a time of 10:38.3.

After graduation from SCHS, McMullen continued her running where she competed for Murray State University and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

At the time of her induction, McMullen was working as an elementary school teacher.

Megan Grizzle Kessler was an outstanding three sport athlete all four years of her tenure at SCHS. She was voted 1st team NEC Volleyball in 1997 and second team all NEC in 1998. In track she was a member of the 1997 indoor 3200M Relay record setting team. Megan was the 1998 Robert Raver Outstanding Field Athlete and in 1999 she made a shot put throw of 37’5″ which stands as the 5th best throw in Lady Wildcat Track history.

In basketball she was the 9th female in school history to score over 1,000 career points and started every game all four years of her basketball career. She was 1st team NEC in 1997 and 1998 and was awarded the NEC Co-MVP in 1999. She was voted the team MVP in 1998 and 1999. Megan was a part of the 28-3 Elite 8 team in 1999 and was given AP All State Honorable Mention in 1999.

Megan then played her college basketball at SIUE and there she made a NCAA Division II Tourney appearance in 2001. After graduating from SIUE she became a SCHS faculty member and coach. Megan coached girls track for five years and is currently coaching girl’s basketball and golf.

Megan has been previously inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of the 1999 Girls Basketball Team and the 1999 Girls Volleyball Team.

Gomez spent the first two years of her prep career at Newcomb, New Mexico and twice helped lead that school’s basketball program to the state tournament. Newcomb had a combined 45-5 record during those two years.

Gomez made the move to Illinois for her junior year and followed Newcomb basketball coach Janet Holst to Salem. Gomez continued her success on the hardwood with the Lady Wildcats and was an All-North Egypt Conference First Team selection in both her junior and senior seasons.

Gomez’ athletic talents carried beyond basketball at Salem. It carried over to track and volleyball. During her junior track season Gomez was a member of the NEC 3200-meter relay champions. She was also a starting setter on the 1996 Lady Wildcats volleyball team that went 26-7, won the NEC and regional championships and advanced to the sectional championship games.

Gomez received a basketball scholarship at Illinois State University and was a four-year letter winner for the Lady Redbirds (1997-2001). During her time at ISU Gomez led the Lady Redbirds in three-point field goals made with 32 during the 2000-01 season. At the time of her induction, Gomez still ranked ninth at ISU in career three-point field goals (91), ninth in career three-point field goal attempts (262), tenth in career three-point field goal percentage at 35 percent (91 for 264) and 25th in career assists (193).

After graduation from ISU, Gomez became a child services specialist at Catholic Charities West Side Head Start Program.

The quartet of Angie Burroughs, Julie Bierman, Trisha Ward and Serra Morton, which was coached by Suzanne (Henry) Brown, broke the school record in three straight postseason races. They began their path at the Class AA sectional race where they defeated a very tough East St. Louis squad on its home turf as well as several other strong relay teams from the metro east and southern Illinois with a first place time of 1:51.1.

The group needed to be even better at a state meet held at Eastern Illinois University and they responded by lowering their time at another school record of 1:50.7 during the preliminaries to earn a spot in the finals.

Burroughs, Bierman, Ward and Morton saved their best for last in the final, as they broke their school record yet again with a time of 1:49.6 and an eighth place finish.

Crystal Anderson was also a key contributor to the squad. In addition to serving as an alternate for the state race, Anderson stepped into Ward’s spot at the North Egypt Conference Meet and teamed up with Bierman, Burroughs and Morton to win that race with a league record time of 1:55.

In addition to their state medal in the 800 medley relay, Burroughs, Bierman, Ward and Morton had a big postseason in other areas and competed in two other state events that year. Burroughs, Bierman, Ward along with Lori Huston qualified for state in the 800 meter relay and set a new school record of 1:47.1 during the state preliminaries even though they were unable to advance to the finals. Burroughs, Bierman, Morton and Aimee Francois competed in the 1600 meter relay at state. While the 800 and 1600 relays did not grab one of the two automatic state berths at the sectional, their respective third place performances still beat the qualifying standard. Morton won the 400 meter dash at the sectional with a school record time of 59.2, but was unable to advance to the state finals.

A 1989 graduate of SCHS, Propst wasted no time making a big splash on the track scene when she won a sectional championship and earned an eighth place finish at the Class AA state meet as a freshman in 1986. Propst’s leap of 5-5 that season stood as the school record for 14 years until Brittany Bowers broke it by one-half inch in 2000.

Propst still owns or shares three school track records including the 100 meter high hurdles at 15.2 set in 1989 and the 300 meter low hurdles of 45.8 set in 1987.

She is also part of the high hurdle shuttle relay record set in 1988 along with Carrie Bierman, Lisa Budde and Janis Donoho.

Propst, who also participated in volleyball and cheerleading while at SCHS, continued her track career with a scholarship at Indiana State University. During her time with the Lady Sycamores Propst set the Ball State Open Meet record in the heptathlon and ranks in the top five in Indiana State University history in that event.

Propst also ranks among the top five times in the 400 meter hurdles. Propst also ranks among the top five times in the 400 meter hurdles.

Propst, who resided at O’Fallon, MO. at the time of her induction, resumed her track career in 2008 when she became an assistant coach for Child of God Middle School.

Young did more than just participate. She also excelled. Young was an All-South selection and state meet participant in cross country, earned All-North Egypt Conference honors in volleyball and won her team’s Rebound and Defense Awards in basketball.

Young probably enjoyed her biggest success in track as a senior where she set a North Egypt Conference and school record in the 800 meter with a time of2:25. Young later lowered that school record to 2:23 when she took first place at the sectional meet.

Young was also part of two other school records. She, along with Carrie Bierman, Jennifer Bethard, and Jennifer Morton teamed up in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 4:14.2 in 1989. In 1990, she teamed up with Amy Iman, Erin Jones, and Monika Schuette for a school record in the 800 meter medley relay with a time of 1:54.7.

While it was not officially recognized as a school record, Young posted the best time at that point in history by a Salem girl in cross country in 1989 when she ran the two-mile course at the sectional meet in 12:29.

Young continued her athletic career in track and cross country at the United States Air Force Academy. Young broke the school freshmen record in the 800 meter and ranks in the school’s top ten all-time in that event. She was named the Air Force Academy Top Track Competitor for the 1992 season. Young also served as team captain.

Young, who has also attended Wichita State University, was a member of the Air Force Academy cross country team that finished second in the NCAA Division II Meet in 1990 and the 1991 team that was 15th. In addition to her athletic participation at the Air Force Academy, Young served on the school’s student government as athletic officer. She also initiated and organized the Air Force Running Club at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

Since graduation from college, Young has taught and coached at Amistad Christian Academy in Del Rio, Texas and Calvary Christian School in Wichita, Kansas where she organized and directed the One-Mile Fun Run Fundraiser. At the time of her induction, Young was coaching youth athletics in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Haney reached that plateau late in the 1978-79 season. She wound up with a final career mark of 1087 points.

Haney saved her best season for last. In her senior campaign of 1978-79, she averaged 21.8 points per contest. Haney was a member of the All-North Egypt Conference First Team, a member of the Decatur Herald All-Area Team and a member of the Chicago Tribune All-State team.

Haney’s senior team produced the best overall season mark for both boys and girls at Salem. The Lady Wildcats went through the regular season undefeated at 23-0 before losing to Centralia in the regional championship game. Salem won its only NEC girls basketball championship that season with Haney.

Haney was also a great track athlete at Salem.

As a sophomore she qualified for the state meet in both the mile and the 440 yard relay. Earlier that season the 440 yard relay team set a school record with a time of 52.7. Haney broke the district record for the mile at Olney with a time of 5:30.1.

As a junior Haney qualified for state again in the mile and went on to finish sixth. She is one of only two Salem girls to ever place at state meet. The other is Lori Beckham.

Haney’s time at the state meet in 1978 was 5:18.2. That mark still stands as the school record.

After high school Haney went on to play college basketball at both Eastern Illinois and Kaskaskia College. She was named the Co-Most Valuable Player for Kaskaskia for the 1983-84 season.

Haney entered the teaching ranks after she graduated from college and spent some time coaching. She coached the Patoka Junior High volleyball team to a 21-1 record in 1987. Haney still teaches at Patoka.
